Bob Bavier Team Race

Summary

Saturday, March 5:

This year's Bob Bavier Memorial Team Race featured a strong contingent of Cross Recional teams. the PRO was Chip Till who sent teams out on the water as the breeze started to fill. Racing took place on Crab Bank which offered some relief from a full day of Ebb Tide. After running one flight the light North Easterly caved to an Easterly. With current running upwind the downwind legs offered opportunities for teams to catch up from behind. The conditions were epic, light medium and fairly steady, which made for a great first full round robin.

Stanford Came out of the day undefeated chased by CofC with 2 loses followed by Harvard, UC Santa Barbara' The breeze shut off around 4PM and PRO Chip Till send the teams in for the day after finishing one complete round robin.

Sunday, March 6:

The Chamber or Commerce rolled out a beautiful Sunday on the bank. Temperatures ashore aproached 80 degrees which set up a medium pressure sea breeze out of the SE. Light winds gave way to full hiking conditions but breeze never exceeded 15 knots making for an amazing day of sailing. Stanford took two losses against Georgetown and UCSB but fought off a charge by Charleston for a piece of the lead in the regatta by defeating them with a well balanced 1-2 the held around the track. Harvard put up a great day, only dropping one race to the regatta champs of Stanford. They bested CofC who took 3rd just ahead of the Green Wave of Tulane.

Sailing was tight throughout the day with teams from bottom to top of the standings besting one and other. Chief Umpire Jeff Woodard did a great job of assembling a team of some recent college sailors and seasoned umpires from across the country. 3 two boat teams of umps kept the racing going. Dockmaster Ned Goss managed rotations and we had no breakdowns making for a really great regatta. Thanks to all the teams that came, it is always fun to host one of the early season Cross Regional events. We are so happy that Charleston Harbor served up some fantastic conditions for a great weekend of racing.
