USF Women's Team Race

Summary

Saturday, February 25:

Four teams from three conferences (SAISA, MAISA, and MCSA) participated in the season's first women's team race regatta hosted by USF. Saturday's racing began inside Bayboro Harbor, featuring light winds, 4-5 knots from the SE and flat water. The breeze starting veering rapidly during round 2, and the fleet was sent in for a lunch break. Racing resumed in the afternoon out in Tampa Bay, with a healthy 8-11 knot westerly. The fleet was sent in at the conclusion of round 4 with Old Dominion in the lead.

Sunday, February 26:

Another day of sunny, 80+ degree temperatures at USF. The fleet began round 5 in a 5-8 knot ENE breeze in Tampa Bay. By lunchtime, the combination of a diminishing breeze, powerboat chop, and incoming tidal current forced the fleet back to shore mid-way through round 6. Patience was rewarded when the predicted seabreeze filled in and the fleet launched for the final time, completing round 6 in a 8-11 knot westerly.

ODU took the honors with a record of 14-4, followed by JU at 11-7, USF at 10-8, and WISC at 1-17. Many thanks to umpires Sean Cornell and Chloe Sweeting, to all who donated their time and boats to assist with the regatta, and to the coaches and sailors for their participation.
