2023 J70 Invite #1

Summary

Saturday, March 18:

Saturday's racing kicked off with a strong NNW breeze blowing down the Thames River along with a moderate ebbing current. Webb kicked off the morning with a horizon job, and continued to sail excellently throughout the day, often battling with CGA Bears 2 for first place. After a brief lunch break and rotation, conditions deteriorated with a sea-breeze attempting to fill from the SW. The 2nd half of the day saw tricky racing with breeze varying between the NW and SW at 3-12 knots. Three races were completed in the afternoon, with the Webb Clippers able to stay extremely consistent with a 2,1,3 despite the conditions. The Clippers lead heading into day 2 with the CGA Bears 2 and the Brown Bears clawing at their heels.

Sunday, March 19:

Day 2 of racing saw competitors navigating a shifty west breeze of initially 8-14 knots and including the occasional auto-tack. The Westerly built throughout the day to ~15-22 knots making for very sporty downwinds including epic planing conditions both with and without spinnakers. Six races were completed on Day 2, the first five raced with spinnakers and the last without. The Webb Clippers and CGA Bears 2 continued to put on excellent performances, with Webb claiming first place for the weekend and Bears 2 claiming 2nd. The Brown Bears and URI Rams duked it out for the final podium spot, with the Rams excelling in the big breeze and surging back into third place. Congrats to all sailors for a great weekend of racing and major thanks the CGA Cadets helping to run the event.
