The Staake Team Race Trophy

Summary

Saturday, March 26:

A shifty light breeze from the SW to the NW at 4-10 knots made for interesting and challenging team race conditions on the Charles River. Two round robins were completed for the six teams vieing for the last two berths in the NE Team Race Championship in two weeks. Racing was conducted by Lucinda Charles with her first mate Fran calling the starting line. Oaklin Keefe organized finish boat and updated Tech score as the event proceeded. Gloria Kevliciute and Trevor Long were busy officiating as umpires throughout the day and did a wonderful job. Wally Corwin kept everything organized ashore.

Racing is tight with MIT and Northeastern tied at an 8-2 record with the Terriers from BU one win behind at 7-3. Tomorrow should bring fresh westerly breezes and the competitors will complete two more round robins with the potential to sail off for ties if time allows.

Sunday, March 27:

Ideal Spring Team racing conditions with a 12-20 knot WNW breeze let the six teams rumble all afternoon on the Charles River in the colorful FJs of MIT. URI sailed super consistently and didn't lose a match all day long to come back and win the Staake Trophy with a tie record of 15-5 along with the MIT Engineers. The Rhody Rams team of Aidan Naughton '22, Taylor Borges '22, Joshua Bartoszuk '25, Sadie Thomas '25, Parker Colantuono '22 and Clare Laroche '23 will be back next weekend along with the MIT squad for the Lynne Marchiando Trophy and the NE Championship Len Fowle Trophy on the following weekend.

Everyone was fortunate to have Oaklin Keefe on scoring along with MIT's Wally Corwin handling the dock side of things. Special thanks to Gloria Kevliciute, Nick Sertl, Sophie Hibben and Will Bailey who volunteered their day to make instantaneous calls as umpires. Their service made for a very special event with justice on the spot. Lucy Charles ripped off the races and begged for snacks between rounds, too.
