Sharpe Trophy Team Race

Summary

Saturday, March 5:

The first weekend of racing in NEISA for the Spring of 2022! Partly cloudy conditions and cold with temps in the mid to high 30's but the breeze was uncooperative until around 2pm. The race committee tried to get races going earlier but the mainly westerly breeze was too up and down and very shifty. After 2pm the southerly looked like it was going to fill but never really materialized until late into the day. Once racing began it was all over the place from the west all the way to southeast at times. Winds ranged from 5-12 knots and a lot of course reconfiguring had to be done throughout the afternoon. 23 races were sailed and we raced until dark, around 5:45pm, in FJs on the Digital N course. A huge thanks to all of Brown sailors for helping out: Lucian Sharpe '24, Sierra Bornheim '24, and Mason Stang '25. A huge thanks as well to Pearson Potts (Brown '16) for helping with course management and judging. There were a few protests and breakdowns that were heard along with some other coaches. Special thanks to MIT Coach Mike Kalin for being the NEISA Rep and to Rob Migliaccio for taking fantastic photos throughout the day that will be up on the NEISA Facebook page.

Sunday, March 6:

Day two of the Sharpe Trophy Team Race was a lot easier on the sailors and race committee than Saturday. Much warmer temps, some rain and some sun, and a mainly west/southwest breeze that built throughout the day. We had everything from 8 to 20 plus knot puffs, it was shifty and up and down, and by the last race a lot of boats were capsizing in the big puffs. We managed to get in two full round robins for the weekend, 14 races for each team. A huge thanks to Brown sailors Izzy Cox '23 and Spencer Dellenbaugh '23 for helping out today. A huge thanks as well to Pearson Potts (Brown '16) for helping with course management and judging. There were a few protests and breakdowns that were heard along with some other coaches. Special thanks to MIT Coach Mike Kalin for being the NEISA Rep. Congratulations to Roger Williams for winning the Sharpe Trophy that came down to the last race with Yale for the win.
