It was a beautiful day in Santa Barbara with temps in the mid 70's and a gorgeous sunny sky. Unfortunately, despite a predicted light westerly, it only developed temporarily, allowing for 8 races before racing was postponed on the water for quite some time due to lack of wind. The breeze filled at around 3:00pm and racing resumed allowing the RC to get through race 21 of 28 in the first round. Tomorrow will resume with finishing off Round 1 and then a top four and bottom four sail off will occur if conditions allow.
Thank you so much to Stephen Long (class of '17) and Chris Weis (class of '18) for umpiring today. Thank you also to Caden Scheiblauer for helping out with rotations and shore breaks.
Another gorgeous beach day in Santa Barbara, however racing was difficult once again with the wind never really turning on much more than 5 knots. The RC scrapped together 7 races to finish off round one and then did a final four race off. It came down to the very last race with UCSB 1 vs Cal Maritime. Cal maritime was able to pull it out in the end to tie the Gauchos in record but win the event overall. UCSB 2 sailed off against Cal Poly for 3rd overall and UCSB 2 pulled the win on that one. Berkeley was the team with the best record in the bottom four sail off which could not be fully completed, so the results stand with Cal finishing 5th.
Thank you so much to all of our umpires today and this weekend including: Kent Pierce (class of '87), Stephen Long (class of '17), Keenan Wolf (class of '18), Haydon Stapleton (class of '18), Remy Margerum (class of '17), Grant Rickon (class of '16). Thank you also to sophomore George Kripac for finishing boats all weekend by himself except when a juvenile seal hopped on board his boat for a while.
Thank you also to all the competitors for coming and sailing the second annual Gaucho Team Race and congratulations to Cal Maritime on the win!
