Montotype Trophy - NEISA Singlehanded Championship

Despite a windy forecast from the effects of Hurricane Lee, the 2023 NEISA Singlehanded Championships for the Monotype/Open in ILCA 7's and the Women's in ILCA 6's began with an 11:30am report time and raceable conditions. 35 ILCA 7's and 10 ILCA 6's launched at 1pm for 1:30 first start. Racing was sailed in a shifty and puffy Northwesterly that ranged from 12-20 knots with some puffs in the mid to upper 20 knot range. Lots of capsizes but great racing for both fleets with 6 races on W4 courses. Thanks to our judges John Pratt and John Pearce who heard a number of breakdown requests and to all of the teams who brought powerboats: Coast Guard, Connecticut College, Harvard, URI, Yale, and the Moses Brown School. Special thanks to Zim for being on site to provide support, boat parts, and charter boats and to Bern Noack (Harvard) for being the NEISA Rep. A huge thanks to all of the Brown sailors who helped out as well: Grant Adam '24, Sierra Bornheim '24, Lucian Sharpe '24, Ann Steffen '25, Tucker Gibbs '27, and Katha Majette '27.

Yale's Mathias Reimer '27 had a dominant day in the Open fleet with only 8 points in 6 races in the 35 boat fleet. Brown's Katharine Doble '26 leads the Women's fleet with 14 points after 6 races. Report time is 9:30am on Sunday with a 10:15am first warning. It looks to be a much tamer and warmer day.

Day 2 of the 2023 NEISA Singlehanded Championships for the Monotype/Open in ILCA 7's and the Women's in ILCA 6's was very different from the day 1. Competitors arrived to much warmer temps and a lot less wind after a full on first day. Racing began at 10:30am in a raceable but dying breeze out of the west. After one race in each fleet, we were delayed for about an hour waiting for breeze to fill back in. We also moved the course more south with the hopes of better breeze. The mainly westerly direction filled in just enough to get in more racing with some delays in between races for the breeze not cooperating. It was very challenging conditions for the 35 ILCA 7's and 10 ILCA 6's all day with huge pressure differentials on the course and positions changing quickly throughout every race. The wind ranged from nothing to full hiking at times during every race with huge shifts. 5 races were sailed in the ILCA 7's and 4 in the ILCA 6's to finish the event just after 3pm.

A huge congrats to Nicholas Reeser '25 from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy on winning the NEISA Open Singlehanded Championship for the Monotype Trophy and to Katharine Doble '26 from the Brown Bears on winning the NEISA Women's Singlehanded Championship. Both of them receive automatic qualifying berths to the ICSA Singlehanded National Championships in November, hosted by Tulane University.
