Sodus Bay Open

Summary

Saturday, October 15:

Upon the arrival at Sodus Bay wind was observed to be a consistent 16 knots with regular gusts up to 25 knots out of the southeast. Given the conditions on the water the Race Committee raised the Answering Pennant postponing all races.

Around noon time the Race committee began to see conditions calming down with a consistence breeze of 13-15 knots and puffs up to 18 knots and lowered the answering pennant, sending division A out for a full rotation of two races. Throughout A fleet's time on the water the wind was slowly but consistently shifting right, amounting to a total shift of 140 degrees over the hour and a half period. At the finish of A fleet's second race the wind was found to be as low as 5 knots. After these two races RIT Tigers one held a strong lead with two first finishes, and RIT Tigers two tied with Maryland for second.

As B fleet got on the water the bay was hit with a dramatic increase in wind velocity, with sustained breeze around 18 knots and gusts up to 25 again. Upon the capsizing of several boats in the fleet and the expectation for the strong winds to hold, November over Alpha was raised ending racing for the day.

Thank you to all of the volunteers at SBJSA for making this event possible. We are hopeful to have calmer conditions for Sunday and get some races in to make up for the lack of races held today.

Sunday, October 16:

Sunday started with winds of 10 knots gusting up into the mid-teens coming from the south. Conditions were favorable for getting a large number of races off to make up for Saturdays lack of racing. Halfway between the 2nd rotation a large wind shift came across the bay shifting roughly 160 degrees, but holding and not shifting further. After quickly resetting the course races were continued in 8-10 knots of breeze. By the end of race 6B, RIT Tigers one holding a strong lead on the rest of the fleet, with Tigers 2 in second closely trailed by University of Rochester. The time of day after race 6B was 1430 and racing was completed for the day.

Thank you very much to all involved to make this event so great, and thanks to all competitors who traveled to Rochester to participate!

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.

The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
