The Turner Team Race

Summary

Saturday, March 9:

Sailors were greeted with less than ideal conditions as several large fronts made their way down the Wando River with gusts well into the 30s along with visible lightning strikes. Things finally cleared enough after two hours of postponement to get a full round-robin in. With racing take place so far up the Wando River (away from the harbor), we were provided just enough shelter from the DI waterfront to run races. The current was ripping out during the round-robin, which made for quick upwinds with the 10-15 knot S/SW breeze. Despite the breeze becoming more favorable, we still saw gusts in the high teens/lower twenties up until the very last few races before it started to taper off. Scores were extremely tight all day and the Final 4 didn't do much to help shake them up, even with the tide switch.

Congratulations to Rollins on winning the 2nd Annual Turner Team Race in a 4 way tie breaker for first. The Citadel & Clemson rounded out the podium for a flat out tie for 2nd overall and USF unfortunately lost out on the 4 way tiebreaker finishing 4th. Florida Tech & Embry-Riddle rounded out the rest of the regatta. Rollins, Citadel & Clemson qualified for the final three berths to SAISA Conference Team Race Champs on Apr. 5-6th at The College of Charleston from this event.

Thank you to all of our volunteers and our host Daniel Island Yacht Club! Dan Machowski and Josephine Stanley did an excellent job on the finish boat. David Loring was tremendous as our Chief Umpire ensuring racing was fair throughout the day. Nick Johnstone was running the signal boat all day and Esteban Forrer helped with umpiring during the Final 4 Round.
