Unfortunately racing on day one of the NEISA Open Dinghy Championship for the Coast Guard Alumni Bowl didn't begin until 3:45pm due to lack of wind. Once the sun came out and the rain went away, a beautiful building S/SE breeze filled in to get in 4 races in each division in 8-14 knots of wind. A division sailed FJs and B-division 420s on W4 courses. Race 5A had to abandoned as a rain cell came through at 5:30pm, concluding racing for the day. An unbelievable double rainbow was seen after the cell passed and the sun came back out, the best one any of us have ever seen along the eastern shore and spanning most of the racing area.
Day two of the NEISA Open Dinghy Championship for the Coast Guard Alumni Bowl began the same way as day one: no wind and a lot of sitting around. A shifty and unstable mainly westerly filled in at around noon to get in 5 more races in each division by the 3pm cutoff. Courses were W4 and W5's with the breeze ranging from 6-12 knots. A-division sailed 420s and B-division FJs. Lots of big right shifts and positive current forced a number of general recalls and one B-division race was abandoned due to a large right shift to the NW. Unfortunately, we couldn't get race 10 B off before the 3pm cutoff with some slow going at the end of the day.
One protest was filed on Saturday resulting in a DSQ and one request for redress was given. A huge thanks to our great judges John Mooney and Maddy McGrath for hearing them and being on the water the whole event to keep the racing clean. Thank you to Mike Kalin (MIT) for being the NEISA Rep and to Rob Migliaccio for taking photos on Sunday. Special thanks to all of the Brown sailors who helped out as well: Leyton Borcherding, Sierra Bornheim, Tucker Gibbs, and Corinne Harrison.
Congratulations to Harvard University on winning the 2024 Coast Guard Alumni over the Brown Bears by 5 points. Thanks to everyone for the patience and great sailing after a lot of sitting around.
