10th Annual Sailpack Oriental Intercollegiate

Summary

Saturday, April 4:

The 10th Annual SailPack Oriental Intercollegiate Regatta delivered a full spectrum of conditions and competition this weekend, showcasing both the best of college sailing and the unmatched hospitality of Oriental. Teams gathered Saturday morning at Bow to Stern Boating Center for the skippers’ meeting and opening ceremony where they were welcomed by Mayor Sally Belangia and members of the Oriental community. Breakfast, provided by the Nautical Collective of Oriental including the Neuse Sailing Association, The Sailing Club of Oriental, and the Oriental Dinghy Club, set the tone for a weekend rooted in community support and involvement.

After launching, teams made their way to the historic Oriental waterfront and racing got underway by 10 a.m. on the Neuse River. The day began with lighter breeze in the 5-7 mph range, steadily building into a more consistent west-southwesterly 10-15 mph by late morning. With light chop, afternoon gusts, and shifting pressure, teams were tested on both boat speed and tactics as conditions built throughout the day. Shoreside, Lou Mac Park served as a hub for teams, coaches, and spectators, with sailors relaxing under the oaks, connecting with one another, and engaging with the local community. Three full A-Division rotations (9 races) and two full B-Division rotations (6 races) were completed with the host NC State establishing an early lead, followed closely by Queens University, University of California-San Diego, and Jacksonville University.

Saturday evening’s traditional North Carolina whole hog pig pickin’ brought everyone together once again for food and fellowship. Sailors, coaches, hosts, families, friends, and community members filled Bow to Stern for an evening defined by great food, live music from The Dunies featuring NC State sailor Jo-Jo Morgan on lead guitar and vocals (and a special guest appearance by members of the William & Mary team on guitar, vocals, and mandolin), and great camaraderie. With perfect weather, a great day of sailing to reflect upon, and lively atmosphere, the night was everything that makes SailPack Oriental unique. Special thanks to Nutrien for their support of the community BBQ.

Sunday, April 5:

Sunday presented a completely different test. A Small Craft Advisory and winds building into the upper 20s, with recorded gusts reaching 30+ mph, forced racing off the Neuse River and into the more protected waters of Smith Creek inside the bridge. Even with challenging conditions, sailors competed fiercely. Heavy air sailing in what turned into a bit of a wind tunnel down the length of Smith Creek dominated the day, with frequent capsizes, equipment strain, and a handful of breakdowns. Conditions demanded resilience, teamwork, and quick recoveries. An initial set of B-Division races was completed to even the balance on the event, then another additional set was completed in both A and B-Divisions to close out the event. Despite the challenge and hard charging squads from Queens University, Jacksonville University, UC-SD and an ascending CNU team, the host NC State Wolfpack held on to the victory securing first place in A-Division, first place in B-Division and the overall regatta win; their first victory at Sailpack Oriental since 2022.

Across two days, SailPack Oriental 2026 showcased the full range of collegiate sailing, from light-air tactics to heavy-air survival. The combination of competitive racing, strong fleet depth, and dramatic conditions made for a memorable 10th anniversary edition.

Just as important as the racing was the continued partnership with the Oriental community. From host housing to meals, volunteer support, and onshore engagement, the event remains a model for how college sailing and local communities can come together to create something special. Special thanks to the Race Committee, event volunteers, Bow to Stern team, and the entire Oriental community for delivering another outstanding SailPack weekend. The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.

The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
