Island Cup Team Race

Summary

Saturday, March 30:

After finishing touches, all 18 boats were rigged and beach launched by 11:30, and were racing shortly after with the first start at 11:40am. A northerly breeze of 5-7knts filled in on Saturday morning, meaning the wind was shifty as it moved around the spit of land to the north but overall was consistent pressure for most of the day. With this great wind, races moved quickly, with sailors sometimes running down the docks to meet their next rotation of boats. Racing continued throughout the day until the wind died down around 4pm. Races 35 and 36 were called off due to the lack of wind and racing was postponed until the following day.

Sunday, March 31:

A northerly wind filled in again on Sunday morning just in time for the first start at 10:30am. Racing continued in good breeze for the next two hours, and a round robin was completed around noon. A champs round was considered to finish the day, but a cancellation of one of the evening ferries prompted the group to call it early in favor of making the remaining ferries. Much fun was had and lots of great team racing was done! Congrats to alumni team Vikings 4 for winning the overall racing, and to student teams Huskies 1 and Vikings 1 for 2nd and 3rd overall (1st and 2nd out of current students, respectively). Many thanks to the Lopez Islander Resort, the Lopez sailing community, and Sail Orcas for hosting and running races!
