Bow-to-Stern Trophy Regatta

Summary

Saturday, March 16:

Sailors arrived at Bow to Stern Sailing Center in Oriental for a cordial check in and skippers meeting followed promptly by launching and a brief sail to the race course off the historic Oriental, NC waterfront at the confluence of the Neuse River and the Pamlico Sound. Varied overcast and windy conditions greeted competitors sailing in a combined 14-boat fleet for a series of windward leeward, W4 races in a consistent northeasterly breeze of 8-10 miles an hour with some mild chop and waves. As the morning progressed, spectators watched from South Avenue and Lou Mac Park and had an excellent view of the goings-on given the wind direction parallel to shore. The host NC State Wolfpack squad showed speed early in the first set and continued to control the fleet as the day continued. The Embry Riddle Eagles kept their team in the mix for a podium spot throughout the first set. Both teams were wrapping up a week of training in Oriental for their individual spring breaks and no doubt had some level of familiarity with local conditions which had been outstanding for the entire week. With chop and some gusts crossing the course during the second and third set, there were a few capsizes but the sailors in each situation executed quick recoveries. In the early afternoon the sun began to come out in full force and the breeze backed off just a bit but competitive racing continued with the talented and dedicated Race Committee and support boats completing three rotations for nine races before calling the regatta for the day. Two protests were heard and disallowed and one breakdown was awarded. Thanks to the SAISA Rep from UNC-Wilmington, too. Congrats to the Wolfpack, Red Terror, and Eagles on the podium finishes for the Bow-to-Stern Trophy Regatta. Special thanks to the Race Committee, Bow-to-Stern Sailing staff and Captain Alexis for their help and support in hosting the regatta, all of the NC State sailors who worked to make the event a success, as well as the Town of Oriental for always showing out for a college regatta, cheering on competitors, and embracing the visiting student-athletes and competitors. Thanks, too, for local media coverage of the event from Towndock.net. Update: Towndock now has this report with photos from the event: https://towndock.net/news/the-spring-break-trohpy-regatta.

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.

The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
