Women's Team Race National Championship

Summary

Saturday, April 23:

It was a great first day at the inaugural College Sailing Women's Team Race National Championship powered by Team One Newport. 56 races were completed on the day despite a late start waiting for the seabreeze to fill in at around 1:30pm in 2014 Zim FJs and 2017 LP Z420s. The breeze ranged mainly between 12-16 knots with great waves and temps in the 60's with lots of sun.

Great thanks to PRO Megan Grapengeter-Rudnick, Ragna Eide, and Courtney Bergh, all Brown class of 2017 graduates, who kept things cranking along. Thanks to our Brown sailors Janelle Li '25, Connor Macken '24, Catherine Morrissette '24, and Lucian Sharpe '24 for helping with finishes and on land. Thank you to Roger Williams Coach Amanda Callahan for organizing a terrific group of umpires who kept the racing fair with full umpiring led by Chief Umpire Carrie Greene. Thanks to everyone who was able to lend us powerboats: the Edgewood Yacht Club, Moses Brown School, Harvard, Dartmouth, and Yale. Thanks to Boston College Coach Greg Wilkinson for being the ICSA Rep and to Team One Newport for being our sponsor.

Sunday, April 24:

The second day of the inaugural College Sailing Women's Team Race National Championship powered by Team One Newport started with a slowly dying easterly breeze to finish out the round robin of 12 teams. We then had one flight in round 2 for the top 6 teams before the breeze diminished for a long period. After it seemed like all hope was lost on getting in anymore races, the sun came out and a nice southerly filled in at around 3pm to finish up round 2 for the top 6 teams. It was a real battle in this round with some really great, close team racing all the way until the end of each race. FJs were used to complete Round 2 and we finished by 4:45pm. Yale, Boston College, Stanford, and Brown were all in contention to win the event until the final few races for each team.

Great thanks to PRO Megan Grapengeter-Rudnick (Brown 2017), Ragna Eide (Brown 2016), and Courtney Bergh (Brown 2016), who ran the races and did an amazing job in some difficult conditions at times. Thanks to our Brown sailors Sierra Bornheim '24, Carly Costikyan '24, Spencer Dellenbaugh '23, Janelle Li '25, Connor Macken '24, Olivia Miller '25, Catherine Morrissette '24, Lucian Sharpe '24, and Mason Stang '25 for helping with finishes and on land. Thanks to Edgewood Yacht Club Vice Commodore Chris Lee for helping with finishes on Sunday and welcoming everyone to Edgewood for this event. Thank you to our terrific group of umpires who kept the racing fair with full umpiring: Chief Umpire Carrie Greene, Marina Barzaghi, Paula Grasberger, Emily Haig, Sophie Hibben, Glora Kevilciute, Johanna Kincaid, Alice Leonard, Kelly McGlynn, Megan Roach, Kelsey Wheeler, and Bob Austin-LaFance. Thanks to Carolyn Campbell-McGovern from the Ivy League for being there to support the event and to present the first ever winner of the Ivy League Championship for Women's Sailing. And lastly, thanks to Brown Athletics photographer David Silverman for taking photos that will be distributed soon.

Every team at the event was a part of College Sailing history at the first ever College Sailing Women's Team Race National Championship. A huge congratulations to Yale on being crowned the first ever champions of this event with a 13-3 record and also the Ivy League Women's Champions. Congrats to second place Boston College and third place Stanford, both one win back with a 12-4 record.
