NEISA Women's Team Race Champs/Dellenbaugh Trophy

Summary

Saturday, April 2:

A great first day of racing at the first ever NEISA Women's Team Race Championship for the Brad Dellenbaugh Trophy. 57 races were completed on the day after a full round robin of all 10 teams and then we started the second round of the top 8 teams. 2014 Zim FJs and 2017 LP Z420s were used. Some really terrific team racing and boathandling in a mainly northwest breeze of 10-20 knots with a few higher puffs and very shifty conditions.

Great thanks to PRO Michael Zonnenberg and Gabe Hannon (Brown '20) who kept things going smoothly all day long and to our finish boat team of Edgewood Yacht Club Vice Commodore Chris Lee and Brown sailors Emily Mueller '25, Tommy Styron '24, and Connor Macken '24. Thank you to Roger Williams Coach Amanda Callahan for organizing a great team of umpires who kept the racing fair with full umpiring: Chief Umpire Bob Austin-Lafrance, Rex Cameron, Britt Hall, Stephanie Hudson, Gloria Kevliciute, and Alex Moreno. Thanks to everyone who was able to lend us powerboats: the Edgewood Yacht Club, Moses Brown School, Connecticut College, Harvard, Roger Williams, and Yale. Thanks to Dartmouth Coach Justin Assad for being the NEISA Rep and to Rob Migliaccio for the incredible pics which are posted on the NEISA Facebook page.

Sunday, April 3:

Day two of the NEISA Women's Team Racing Championship for the Dellenbaugh Trophy was another battle with some really great, close team racing. It seemed like many many races came right down to the finish as the umpires had their hands full at times. 30 more races were sailed after a morning delay until around 11:15am waiting for a light southerly breeze to fill in. Once things got going the southerly kept slowly building up to around 12-14 knots. Z420s were used to complete Round 2 and then we did a top 6 third round in FJs which started at 2pm and was finished by 4pm. The 10 minute races seemed a lot longer in this round with so many lead and play changes and nothing came easy for any of the top 6 teams.

A huge thanks to PRO Michael Zonnenberg and Gabe Hannon (Brown '20) who kept things going smoothly throughout the weekend and ran 88 awesome races. Thank you to our finish boat team of Edgewood Yacht Club Vice Commodore Chris Lee and Brown sailors Jed Bell '23, Will George '23, Mason Stang '25, and Connor Macken '24 for all of their help. Thank you to our terrific umpire team led by Chief Umpire Bob Austin-Lafrance, Rex Cameron, Britt Hall, Stephanie Hudson, Gloria Kevliciute, and Alex Moreno.

Congratulations to the Boston College Eagles on winning the inaugural NEISA Women's Team Race Championship for the Brad Dellenbaugh Trophy, finishing with an impressive 18-3 record and receiving an automatic berth to the the College Sailing Women's Team Race National Championship, April 23-24, back at Brown University and the Ted Turner '60 Sailing Pavilion at the Edgewood Yacht Club. Racing for places 2nd through 5th was super tight between Ivy rivals Yale, Dartmouth, Brown, and Harvard.
