The inaugural MAISA Womens Team Race Championship got underway in a light NW wind in the Washington Sailing Marina Lagoon. A few races were completed before the wind shifted to the NE and then eventually SE. Once the water level dropped in the Lagoon racing was moved to the Potomac River. Racing continued in the River in a perfect SE wind of 10-15mph until about 615pm. In all 37 races were completed. All the races were close. Many thanks to the Georgetown undergrads for running the races and to GW for the use of their motorboats.
Boats headed out at 10am with the goal of completing round 2 and round 3. The wind didn’t fill in until about 1115 and when it did it filled in with a strong WNW of about 15-20mph. Racing in the Lagoon in a westerly meant really shifty races with autotacks and multiple lead changes. After the 2nd round was completed the RC and umpires decided a 3rd round of 8 wasn’t going to be completed to we opted for a round of 6. Racing was moved to the river to get better racing.
The final 6 commenced at 230 with a race between Georgetown and Cornell who were tied after 2 rounds. The final races were sailed in winds that occasionally gusted to 40. With a few capsizes in the opening races there were delays in getting races started. Racing was called at 350 when it was determined the final 6 wouldn’t be completed in time.
Many thanks to all the sailors who did a great job in difficult conditIons.
The Umpire team was fantastic. Doc Sullivan was the Chief umpire and he was joined by a great group of women sailors- Aitana Mendiguren, MaryKate Mezzetti, Rose Edwards, Hannah Hess, Lilla Salvesen, Gwynie Dunlevy and Marley Mais.
Congrats to Georgetown University for winning the first ever MAISA Women’s Team Race Championship
