Joseph R. Duplin Trophy

Summary

Saturday, March 26:

The 41st Joe Duplin Trophy (and the first in three years) got off to a whimpering start for lack of good wind. Wind was West or South, but not Southwest, and speeds of 0-7. After 15 races, the wind turned East. The course was reset and two more races were started but abandoned as the wind turned Northeast and died to less than one knot.

Race 5 ended with a Tufts win but there was a boat problem with a Brown boat (not their fault) so that race will be re-sailed. Race 16 occurred as the wind went from South to East with a downwind finish resulting in a number of protests. It was decided to abandon race 16 after the finish given massive windshifts including a downwind finish. Races 17 and 18 were abandoned while underway.

Forecast is for plenty of wind Sunday, possibly too much. That's March.

Thank you to Tufts sailors Maisie MacGillivray, John Eastman, Leo Terry, Bryan Trammell, and Jack Flores for scoring, finish duty, and dock crew. Also thank you to Dartmouth Coach John Pierce for agreeing to judge protest hearings.

Sunday, March 27:

A far better day greeted eight women's teams at Mystic Lake today. Winds were West 10-20 shifting through about 30 degrees, unlike the wind that went around in circles yesterday.

after a quick re-sail from yesterday, we quickly finished round one with races 16 through 28. After a couple quick protests (thank you coaches), a gold four double round-robin using 12 boats and a silver four single round-robin ensued. MIT and Tufts had an unbreakable tie in the silver fleet, but Brown maintained their slim lead over Harvard in the gold.

Thanks again to the Tufts helpers joined today by Niall Sheridan who took over scoring duties.
