The Icebreaker lived up to its namesake, with almost three-quarters of Upper Mystic Lake still covered by a five inch sheet of ice on Saturday morning. Tufts sailors arrived early to break up skim ice that had formed in the usable portion of the lake overnight. Racing featured several icebergs adrift on the course. Breeze was between due north and NNW, ranging from 2-14 knots. Nine races were sailed in A division, but due to wind instability preceding an easterly shift before the start of race 7B, racing was abandoned for the day. Because racing was canceled Sunday due to weather conditions, the procedural rules stipulated that race 9A must be stricken from the results (only two additional A division races may be scored in the event of a cancellation). Another scoring issue reflects multiple requests for redress from teams claiming that hull 3 was taking on water. Since the consistently low scores of boat 3 supported this claim, and since by coincidence of the rotation the host school never ended up sailing boat 3, race organizers deemed it fair and proper to give all competitors who sailed boat 3 average scores for the races in question. A final thanks is extended to competitors for braving cold temperatures, as well as to Tufts students, and alumna Emily Shanley-Roberts, who assisted in preparation, scoring, redress hearings, and the recording of drone footage of two races, which will be made available to competitors upon request.
Sunday racing was canceled due to heavy snow and dangerous driving conditions. Apologies to all those who got on the roads early before the cancellation was announced.
