Wood Trophy

Saturday, March 10:

8 teams arrived on the Charles to beautiful conditions. Temperatures were in the high 30s and there was a stiff 5-15 knot breeze with regular puffs exceeding 20 knots. This made for exciting team racing conditions! There were several capsizes throughout the day and many close calls. Many thanks to MIT Sailing for providing their facility, rescue boat and support, Ken Legler from Tufts for manning the finish boat all day, Jon Farrar from Northeastern for manning the mark boat and Harvard alum Colin Santangelo '11 for serving as the PRO - the regatta would not have been possible without everyone's help.

1 complete round robin was sailed and a second was started. We hope to finish the second round robin and sail a final series, time permitting. Harvard leads after day one with an 8-2 record, with URI and Tufts tied for second at 6-4.

Sunday, March 11:

Classic early "spring" weather for the second day of the Wood Trophy, with blue skies and 5-10 knot breezes shifting from W to N and then back. Despite the stolen hour of sleep, teams sailed a clean Sunday, with no protests despite a number of tight races.

The second round robin was finished by early afternoon, the top four teams sailed a final round robin. Tufts stole the final RR with a 3-0 performance, jumping up into a tie with the Harvard Crimson overall. Harvard won the head-to-head 2-1, so takes the Wood Trophy overall. A nice way to end the week for the Harvard team.

Thanks again to Jon Farrar from Northeastern for mark-boat duties all day, and to Ken Legler for setting the finish and hearing several protests. Thanks also to Maria Tarazona '21 from Harvard for taking finishes on Sunday.

Finally, a big thank-you to Fran Charles and MIT for letting us host at MIT on short notice and providing marks, a safety boat, and support all weekend!
