Aaron Szambecki Team Race

Summary

Saturday, March 26:

Sailors were greeted with a stiff 13-19 knot Northeasterly for the prompt 9:45 start of the 2016 Aaron Szambecki Team Race. As the day went on, the breeze gradually shifted to the east before tapering all the way down to 6 knots by the end of racing. The Monarch sailors did an outstanding job of knocking out 56 races on the day in the range of conditions. A huge thanks to Christine Accettella and her terrific umpire team of providing full coverage for all of the races.

A special thanks also goes to Spectrum Financial for sponsoring the regatta with breakfast this morning. The sailors, umpires, and race fans all appreciated it!

Racing will continue tomorrow with the schedule featuring the completion of the triple round robin and a double top/bottom 4.

Sunday, March 27:

Sailors were greeted with a nice Easter Sunday brunch at the sailing center before heading out on the water. There they met cooler temps and some rain today as the 2016 Aaron Szambecki Team Race was completed in a lighter 5-9 knot Northeasterly. In all 84 races were completed for the regatta. The Monarch sailors were kept busy moving marks through the final race to keep each race fair in the shifty conditions. In the end the Georgetown Hoyas emerged victorious in a closely fought regatta with an 18-3 record, edging the College of Charleston Cougars by virtue of their head-to-head record for the tie-breaker. Rounding out the podium were the St. Mary's Seahawks who also edged out Navy on a tie-breaker.

A big thanks goes out to our sponsor, Spectrum Financial, as well as our great group of umpires: Rob Overton, Carrie Greene, Jeff Borland, John Mooney, Vicki Sodaro, Eric Johnson, Andrea Luna, and our Chief Umpire, Christine Accettella!
