SAISA South Trophy

Summary

Saturday, September 19:

Eight teams gathered at USF St. Petersburg for the SAISA South Trophy. A and B divisions sailed in a combined fleet for a total of 16 boats on the starting line. Morning winds were much more lively than forecasted, allowing six races to be sailed before lunch. Competitors saw 6-8 knots from the northeast during the first set with 10-15 degree shifts on every leg of the course. Flat water and an outgoing tide made for exciting racing in the Coast Guard basin.

The breeze lightened up for the second set of the day, but the shifts remained active. Sailors raced in 4-7 knots in increasingly shifty conditions. By the end of the set, there were fewer puffs as the breeze tapered down and everyone went in for a shore break.

The final set of the day was a struggle to complete. Dying winds from the northeast caused many races to be abandoned, some before they even started. Big shifts, light air, and an outgoing tide were the dominant factors at play. Jacksonville's two teams continued to perform in the challenging conditions, landing them in the top two finishes for the weekend.

There were no protests, breakdowns, or requests for redress. Thank you to the USF Bulls for hosting a great day of racing.

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.

The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
