2026 Lake Erie Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta

Check-in opened at 14:00 but our first team did not arrive until well after 15:30. As teams trickled in, got signed in and were greeted by our PRO and given walk throughs, they began to meet up with their respective boat owners/Boat Reps to go over plans for the weekend. During this time, teams are given the opportunity to sail the boats at their own accord with the owner/rep on board (this is the person who stays with them all weekend). We had a triple event overlap on Friday at North Cape Yacht Club. Not only did we have the opening of LEIOR, but we also had a guest bartender night at the Club, and our Monthly Friday Fun Race. Some teams took the opportunity to practice on their boats and then participate in the Friday Night Fun Race (JAM Only). Teams began to trickle in for the evening around 19:30, where they were greeted with some good comfort food: chips, tomato soup, and grilled cheese sandwiches. Teams spent the evening hanging around the club until close around Midnight. Most teams stayed on property and directly on their respective boats.

Breakfast (Homemade Muffins and Yogurt bar, with coffee and water) was served starting at 07:00. At 08:00, we held a skippers' meeting, followed by a quick debrief on safety, man overboard procedures, race goals for the day. At 09:00, the 1-Hour Harbor Gun went off, and the Race Committee left the dock. Teams followed suit out to our West Mark right off the club to begin preparing for the day's Windward Leeward racing. First course was set in wind conditions ranging from 5-8kts of breeze from the south, with light to little chop. First race started on time at 10:00 with the breeze holding around our minimum of 5kts. Our first boat rounded the weather mark in about 15 minutes, with all boats completing a full lap in 32 minutes. Target time per race is 50min for the prevailing weather conditions. The wind remained steady, allowing for another race to be completed in short time after the last boat to finish. After the second race of the day our PRO Duane Burgoyne scheduled a 30-minute break to allow teams to snack, eat and hydrate before continuing. This gave our RC time to adjust the course slightly as the wind had shifted a few degrees to the left. Once the break was over, we were able to complete 3 more Windward-Leeward races. This brought the total number of races to 5 for the day. All boats and teams were back in the harbor by 16:00. We gave the Kitchen staff time to finish prepping the nights meal, and the kids time to debrief, cool off and relax before dinner. Dinner for the evening was Ham, Scallop Potatoes, Chips, and Green beans. Once dinner was well underway we had time for QA with the Judge and PRO, along with a debrief for the day. This was followed by a voluntary fun night of 1 Word Lyric challenge. Followed by free time to mingle and hang out at the club until the club closed at Midnight.

Teams were greeted with a hot oatmeal bar for breakfast beginning at 07:00 with fresh fruit toppings and leftover muffins and yogurt from Saturday. Plenty of coffee was again consumed this morning. At 08:00, we held a skippers' meeting, followed by a discussion of the day's race course layout for the long-distance race. The 1-Hour Harbor Gun went off @ 09:00, and the Race Committee left the dock. Teams followed the Race Committee out to our West Mark right off the club to begin preparing for the day's long distance race. The course was set as follows, Start: NCYC West Mark, Proceed to the following NCYC Marks to port: NCYC East, NCYC West, NCYC South, NCYC East, NCYC West, NCYC East, Finish at NCYC West. Wind for the day looked a little light, so the RC made provisions to shorten the course if necessary. Wind was sitting at 300 deg around 5-7kts of breeze, leaving flat water for the teams to race on. By around 11:30, the teams had already rounded the East, West, and South Marks and were on their way to the East Mark before coming back to the West Mark (the starting pin). We called the PRO to go ahead and shorten the course, allowing teams ample time to return, eat, and hold awards before leaving for the day. This would allow teams ample time to make their way home for the day. Our PRO made the announcement and sounded the horn to signal a shortened course for all competitors. Teams finished at the West Mark, and began trickling in at 13:10. All teams were inside and had their boats put away and cleaned by 14:00. Teams were greeted with a loaded Baked Potato bar with , butter, sour cream, Chili, Cheese, Broccoli, and scallions. They proceeded to eat us out of house and Home. We had a quick Debrief with the PRO and Judge starting at 14:45 to go over an avoided issue at the Pin during the start. There was potential for a protest, but none were filed. Our Judge went over what he saw, what happened and how. Our Judge talked the teams through the multiboat protest that could have occurred. Once that was completed we held the awards ceremony for the regatta presenting 1st-3rd for the event overall and 1st-3rd for the long distance race which is separately sponsored by PHRF-LE.
