MCSA Sloop Championship

Summary

Saturday, September 21:

Eight teams from seven schools competed in four races on Flying Scots. Winds were too light to sail when the SIs indicated so racing was delayed until 12:45 pm.

With 5-7 mph winds the teams began racing on W-4. The first boats finished in just under 30 mins. with the last boat crossing the finish line about 25 mins. later. After two races the teams rotated boats for the next two races where they sailed a shorter course, W-3 using the same mark set. In the second pair of races, the first boat finished in just under 40 mins with the last boat finishing about 15-20 mins later.

During the boat exchange a boat was substituted into the rotation due to an equipment breakdown. The sails from the first two races were used on the substituted boat.

There were no protests filed.

PRO George Griswold greeted the teams and provided directions but was unable to attend during the racing; Bill Heller, Race Chair, substituted as PRO. In addition to the race committee boat, there were a mark set boat and three chase boats to assist as needed. On shore there were about 5 Flying Scot sailors from DYC to explain rigging protocol.

Sunday, September 22:

Eight teams from seven schools competed in the last two races of the MCSA Sloop Championship. As winds continued to be very light and patchy in the morning, racing began in the afternoon. Despite a hopeful breeze when setting the course, the winds vacillated between 1 and 5 mph causing the Race Committee to wait about 90 mins before starting. Fortunately the winds stayed steady around 7-8 mph through racing.

Both races were run on the W-4 course and the first finish times were about 25 mins after the start. The second race finished before 3 pm.

Bill Heller continued as the substitute PRO. In addition to the race committee boat, there was a mark set boat and one chase boat.

George Griswold announced the final standings and handed out the awards.

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.

The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
