2019 Triangle Tango Intercollegiate

Summary

Saturday, November 16:

Cold temperatures and hot coffee welcomed sailors to Lake Crabtree for the 2019 Triangle Tango Intercollegiate Regatta. Blustery conditions, a northeasterly consistently between 10 and 20 mph, strong gusts approaching 30 mph, and squirrelly shifts kept sailors on their toes throughout the day. With A-Division in FJs, B-Division in 420s, and C-Division in Lasers racing with sequential starts, traffic management was a key success factor, as was navigating around capsizes which were plenty. Those sailors unprepared for gusts often found their way into Lake Crabtree and even one race committee member found themselves in the water at one point.

On the course, UNC-Chapel Hill and the University of Georgia led early in the co-ed A-Division with the Tarheels dialing in three bullets in the first set. UNC would hold on to the lead in A-fleet despite a strong charge from Wake Forest who would finish 2nd in the division. For the women racing in B-Division, USC and NC State were strong out of the gate, only to see USC make gains over the course of the day and East Carolina find their way into second position after strong results in the second set. For the Lasers racing (and scored outside of Techscore), UNC-Wilmington's Thomas Smith jumped into an early lead but was caught eventually by NC State's Scott Harris. In the end, the USC's performance in B-Division was the difference-maker as the Gamecocks kept UNC-Chapel Hill at bay to win the gnarly 2019 Triangle Tango Intercollegiate Regatta. Many thanks to the sailors who traveled to Raleigh to compete and to the Race Committee including SailPack alumni and representatives from the Greater Raleigh Sports Alliance (https://www.visitraleigh.com/sports-event-planners/) who kept three divisions racing and helped orchestrate a myriad of safety boats on the course over the span of the event.

Sunday, November 17:

Due to deteriorating conditions, Sunday racing was replaced by a regatta brunch for all of the teams hosted by NC State. No one capsized. Congrats to the USC Gamecocks on the regatta win!

Score history

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.

The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
