2015 Aaron Szambecki Team Race

Summary

Saturday, March 28:

ODU’s home regatta the Aaron Szambecki Team Race not only memorializes ODU Team Captain from 1996 and avid team racer, but it also provides the opportunity to raise awareness for suicide prevention. Aaron took his life shortly after his college sailing career came to an end. With awareness, suicide is preventable. All campuses have resources available to help students in need. What an awesome day on the Elizabeth River! We saw a little bit of everything, including snow flurries, 20 knot winds, dolphins, rockets, and some great sailing. Two full round robins were completed with minimal delays while providing restroom breaks as need for sailors, umpires, and race committee personnel.

At the end of two rounds, the Cougars from the College of Charleston hold a lead on the event. Tomorrow will see the completion of the 3rd round robin, with the addition (hopefully) of double top and bottom 4 rounds, thereby completing the "Triple Lindy."

A huge thanks to Town Pointe Yacht Club for grilling some delicious hamburgers and hotdogs, but also for some terrific corn chowder than warmed everyone on a chilly (but not as bad as last month) regatta day.

Also many thanks to the Monarchs for their Race Committee work, and the umpires who spent nearly the entire day on the water with their only compensation being some hot chocolate and our thanks.

Stay tuned tomorrow for the the results of yet another successful Aaron Szambecki Team Race!

Sunday, March 29:

Another terrific day on water at the Szambecki Team Race. In addition to yesterday's awesomeness, sailors were greeted with ice on the dock and surrounding rocks with a fluctuating WNW breeze at 8-15 knots. The third round robin was completed and a top Final 4 was also completed. A Bottom Round of 4 was attempted but not fully completed by one race. As per RRS Appendix D, the races stood as more than 80% of the scheduled races were completed. Therefore the scores remain as they stand.

Again a huge thanks to the team of umpires led by Christine Accettella, our racing team headed by Mark Murphy, and the contingent of Monarch sailors that helped run over 100 races for the weekend during this as-so-far very cold and bleak Spring season.

Congratulations to the Charleston Cougars for sealing the win in a hotly contested final race against the Cardinal from Stanford.
