Nelson Roltsch Team Race

Summary

Saturday, February 28:

Dense fog and light winds greeted the teams this morning. A less than promising 5 knots was on the course so the regatta attempted to start on time. Unfortunately it died as teams got to the racing area, where teams remained until the decision to postpone ashore. At around 2:30pm a light northerly refilled and the regatta went afloat.

Only 3 races were able to be run in a light 4-6 knot northerly before the wind dropped below the minimum. The breeze never came back up enough to race and the decision to send everyone in was made at 4:00pm.

Tomorrow racing starts at 9:00am and hopefully the conditions are more conducive to great racing.

A big thanks to the Race Management and Umpire team, with several Tulane and other College Sailing alumni returning to help with a great event.

Race management included Alanna Austin (TU '21), Raquel Shulman (TU '25), and Lucy Spearman (TU '25).

Our umpire team consisted of Chief Umpire Michelle Lahrkamp (Stanford '24), Aidan Dennis (Miami '25), Atlee Kohl (Miami '25), Sonia Lingos-Utley (Yale '22), Ciara Rodriguez-Horan (TU '23), and Jack Solmo (TU '25).

Sunday, March 1:

A much better breeze forecast and conditions greeted the teams today. A decent 5-7 knot ENE breeze got us started and backed a bit throughout the morning but remained steady in its velocity through the end of Round 1.

Athletes went in for a short break around 12pm, and when they returned the breeze had shifted to the ESE and became very puffy and shifty. The velocity increased to 7-15 knots with the shifts making no lead truly safe. These races were incredibly tight battles throughout the rest of the day. The 2nd round was concluded at 2:20pm.

In the end the Stanford Cardinal were dominant with an undefeated 10-0 record. It was a tight battle for the top 4 spots with Navy, Charleston, and Tulane all within a win of each other.

Again a huge thanks to our Race Management and Umpire teams for running a great event. It was great to see so many recent alumni of College Sailing giving back to the sport!
