2026 Azalea Bowl Regatta

Summary

Saturday, March 28:

The 2026 Azalea Bowl Regatta brought together a deep national field for a weekend of highly competitive racing on Banks Channel, where unseasonable cold temperatures, strong breeze, and challenging current tested teams from the opening races through the final rotation.

Saturday’s conditions set the tone early, with steady wind of 15-20 mph and chilly air creating a physically demanding day on the water (and for some sailors, in the water). Current in Banks Channel played a constant role, particularly on starts and downwind legs, rewarding teams that could stay in phase and adjust dynamically. By Sunday afternoon, the conditions began to shift. Sunshine broke through, temperatures climbed, and the breeze eased, requiring a different approach as teams adjusted from survival sailing to more strategy and fleet management.

That range of conditions contributed to tight racing throughout the fleet. Positions changed frequently across both divisions, and the overall standings remained unsettled heading into the final races. In the end, Jacksonville secured the win with 75 points, followed closely by NC State with 79, and Roger Williams in third with 83, with the outcome decided only in the closing rotations. NC State’s strong B Division performance kept them in contention throughout, while Jacksonville’s consistency across both divisions proved decisive. A late OCS for Roger Williams knocked the Hawks from the top of the podium where they had visited throughout the two-day contest. Behind these top three, the depth of the fleet was evident, with competitive finishes from teams including Christopher Newport, Michigan, Penn State, and Virginia Tech, and close racing extending well into the middle of the standings. The combination of heavy breeze, current, and shifting conditions made consistency difficult to maintain, placing a premium on clean boat handling and minimizing mistakes.

Off the water, the Azalea Bowl once again delivered a standout experience that matched the quality of racing. The weekend experience for everyone was marked again by outstanding hospitality, including breakfast provided both days by Spoonfed and a Saturday evening dinner hosted by Islands Grill. Sponsors for the event provided giveaways and prizes for the College Night including Rooster, Zim Sailing, while presentations created opportunities for high school sailors (who were also competing in a concurrent HS regatta at the venue) to connect with college teams, sailors and coaches, and learn more about collegiate sailing. The event also provided valuable time for teams to hangout on rotations and make friends.

The regatta was hosted by UNC Wilmington and NC State at the Carolina Yacht Club on Wrightsville Beach whose outstanding organization and quality race management ensured a smooth and competitive event despite the demanding conditions. With results coming down to the final races and a full spectrum of weather and racing on display, the 2026 Azalea Bowl Regatta once again demonstrated why it remains a key event on the spring collegiate sailing calendar and a favorite community event. The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.

The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
