Thomas H. Stafford, Jr. Trophy

The inaugural Thomas H. Stafford, Jr. Trophy Regatta was a great success and we were honored to be joined by the regatta namesake, Dr. Stafford and his family, special guests at the regatta. Dr. Stafford welcomed sailors and coaches to Raleigh with kind words about the Wolfpack Sailing program and the importance of student activities and athletics. After a delay waiting on wind, ameliorated by the sun and shoreside hospitality compliments of Celsius Energy Drinks, racing began around 11:30am with a northwesterly breeze of 5-7 mph on a W4 course. From the start, the host Wolfpack jumped out to a lead followed by the University of South Carolina Gamecocks, and the Davidson College Wildcats. After two races in A-Division, the wind once again died down putting the regatta on hold. After a shoreside AP, B-Division went out to race and completed three races in a shifty breeze of 4-5 mph supported by an indefatigable race committee and mark boat who kept the course square. Strong showing in B-Division from Wake Forest Demon Deacons and the UNC-Wilmington Seahawks pushed them higher in the standings with the host NC State Wolfpack protecting their early lead. A-Division returned to the course and completed a final race to finish the full rotation that was delayed earlier in the day. As conditions lightened up, any further racing was abandoned after three races in each division. The Stafford Trophy stays in Raleigh with the NC State win, followed on the podium by Wake Forest, and the University of South Carolina.
