Eleven teams arrived for the SAISA Women's Spring Dinghy Conference Championships for the Ann Boyd Trophy.
A late season cold front pushed through the evening before, and the air temperatures were far below normal, barely reaching the low 70's. Winds started from the north at 8-9 knots, but as forecast, rapidly backed to the NW and strengthened, peaking at a steady 12-13 knots with gusts to 22 knots. The wind shifts were large, both in direction and velocity. In addition, a full moon resulted in much stronger currents than usual. Early in the day boats were pushed over the line resulting in several general recalls and use of the I flag, while later in the day boats were starting noticeably below the line.
Nine races were completed in each division, all W4s and W5s, averaging 13 to 16 minutes in length. No protests were filed.
Two more races in each division are scheduled for day 2, with winds forecast to be extremely light and a strong current - challenging conditions for sailors and race official.
With two races remaining in each division on day 2, both sailors and Race Committee were racing against a dying breeze and a strong flooding current across the course. USF had a slight lead going into the day, with Jacksonville and Charleston close behind.
Racing began promptly at 9:30am in a 6-7 knot northeast breeze. All four races were W4's, averaging 15-20 minutes long, with the wind down to 4 knots by the end of racing at noon.
USF emerged as the winner, with Charleston and Jacksonville in a nail-biter for the second spot. Charleston clinched the second spot, so both USF and CoC are now automatically qualified for College Sailing's National Fleet Racing Women's Championship hosted by St. Mary's College.
Thank you to all coaches and teams for their participation and support of the SAISA conference and to Miami's coach Bill Johns for serving as ICSA rep.
