SAISA North Points #1

Summary

Saturday, February 27:

After nearly a year hiatus college sailing is back in SAISA! On an overcast but ultimately windy day, sailors from Clemson, The Citadel, UNC-Chapel Hill, and NC State gathered at Lake Crabtree for SAISA North Points #1 regatta. After an initial abandonment in the first race, conditions improved quickly and the a fairly consistent westerly breeze filled in for some great dinghy racing. Sailing in a combined fleet, the host NC State Wolfpack B-fleet jumped out to an early lead, but were soon caught by the two Clemson boats who settled in and held the lead for the remainder of the day. In their return to competition after a few dormant years, a revitalized Citadel Bulldogs squad were right in the mix with the UNC Tarheels close behind. As sailors faced a crowded and competitive start line, it became a game of playing the shifts to lead the fleet. The on-the-water action attracted a lot of attention from people enjoying their day at Lake Crabtree County Park and spectators were treated to some great competition. The race committee was able to complete 13 races on the day and had great shoreside support from NC State volunteers. All of the sailors and volunteers did a great job with social distancing, consistently wearing masks, and following a host of COVID protocols to make SAISA North Points #1 a safe and fun event. No protests or breakdowns were filed and racing wrapped up around 3pm in time for visiting teams to hit the road.
