Georgetown Team Race

Summary

Saturday, March 2:

Despite a slow start this morning, two round robins were completed on a long day one of the 2019 Georgetown Team Race.

The wind was minimal, but high water levels allowed for racing to be held in the lagoon to hide from the stronger current in the Potomac River. However the shifty breeze in the lagoon was a challenge, frequently shifting from NW to W in the morning races making for a few slow flights during the first round robin as well as some race cancelations. Eventually the wind mostly settled NW allowing us to finish the first round robin before a lunch break. After lunch the wind continued to make race management a challenge, but the second round robin went quickly in a N-NW.

Hobart and William Smith College is at the top of the leaderboard with one more round robin scheduled for tomorrow.

Sunday, March 3:

Teams rotated back into FJs for the third and final round robin of the Georgetown Team Race in Washington Sailing Marina's infamous 'Lagoon' with a light NE-E breeze. Despite very shifty conditions and many course adjustments, the race committee and umpires did a great job keeping the race course fair.

Thank you to our Chief Umpire, Rob Overton, and his team of umpires: Sean Golden, AJ Reiter, Meaghan Macrae, Albert Kraus, Roger Dorr and Kai Friesecke. It's great to see young college sailing alumni give back to college sailing. Thank you to the team of Georgetown and GW sailors who helped with hosting duties.

Congratulations to Hobart and William Smith for winning the 2019 Georgetown Team Race.
