Prosser Trophy

Summary

Saturday, April 5:

We had great conditions for the first day of the Prosser Trophy at the Naval Academy. The fleet headed out right on time under sunny skies and temperatures in the 50s to a course set right outside of Santee Basin in the Severn River. Winds ranged from 12-25 knots throughout the day and PRO Gavin O'Hare got through a full 8 team round robin before we took a short lunch break. After lunch, we completed a second round robin before beginning the third and final round. At the end of the day, we re-sailed race 1 due to a breakdown. Our umpire team of ChUmp Rob Overton, Andrew Cole, Herb Larrabee, David Clinnin, Dobbs Davis, Rob Rowlands, and Ric Crabbe did a terrific job of settling things on the water on this long and grueling day and zero protests were filed on shore. Racing resumes tomorrow, where we hope to complete round robin three to determine four berths at the Nationals.

Sunday, April 6:

Sailors arrived at 9:00 am to a light northerly. With only 19 races to complete, sailors headed into the Severn River with every intent on completing sailing before 12:00 pm. The breeze however, would not cooperate. At around 11:30, a Northeasterly began filling in to Annapolis Harbor, and the whole event moved out toward Greenberry Point. With coaches and sailors packed onto the work skiff, metal shark, and edgewaters, racing resumed around 12:00 pm to a fairly consistent 4-8 from the east North East. The final flights were considered without incident, or so it would seem. The final qualifying spot came down to a procedural ruling. With all protests sorted, St. Mary's College of Maryland was crowned champion of the 2014 Prosser Trophy. Georgetown, Navy, and Old Dominion University rounded out the rest of the qualifying teams, finishing in that order. A magnanimous thanks to the volunteers that were here early on Sunday to get racing started on time. They include the mids, Ric Crabbe, Herb Larrabee, Andrew Cole, Rob Rowlands, Dave Clinnon, John Renehan, and ChUmp Rob Overton. PRO Kyle Assad filled in on Sunday, besting the challenging the conditions for another day of great sailing. Thank you to all the teams, parents, and volunteers for coming to the Robert Crown Center for the 2014 Prosser Trophy.
