ICSA Coed Dinghy Eastern Semifinals

Summary

Saturday, April 30:

Thirty six teams arrived at the US Sailing Center-Long Beach this morning along with a classic Southern California Santa Ana weather pattern. The traditional onshore sea breeze that Long Beach is famous for was battling with the offshore Santa Ana winds and unfortunately for the sailors the race course seemed to be ground zero for that battle. Both fleets were postponed on the water until a little after 12:30 while we waited for the sea breeze to overtake the offshore flow and provide us with the steady winds to race. By utilizing a modified trapezoid course the committee was able to keep both fleets racing at a constant pace for the rest of the day. Six races were ultimately completed in both divisons and both fleets. The judge team led by Don Becker and consisting of Don, Chris Petracco, Katie Maxim, Vicki Sodaro and Glenn Oliver were kept extremely busy all day between the close action on the water and the 14+protests that were filed and heard during the day. Once everyone made it back to the US Sailing Center the hospitality committee treated the group to a Mexican taco bar with carne asada and pollo asada. Report time tomorrow is 9am and the last race needs to be started before 5pm so the sailors should be resting up for another long day.

Sunday, May 1:

Sunday arrived with crystal clear views of Catalina Island in one direction and snow capped mountains in the opposite with a struggle offshore breeze. The RC attempted to set a course with the offshore breeze but were only able to complete 2 eastern and 1 western race before the incoming seabreeze put everything into postponement for a course shift. Once the seabreeze filled in it continued to build and allowed the RC to finish 12 eastern races before the 5pm cut off time. Sailors were then greeted to a BBQ dinner at the sailing center while boats were packed up and trophies handed out. Congratulations to our nine qualifiers.

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.

The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
