Stuart Walker Trophy

The Stuart Walker Trophy began with a sputter but sprang into gear after the first hour. A-fleet departed the dock of historic Arnold's Bay on Lake Champlain around 11:45 and struggled through a long first race with bands of dying, inconsistent wind. But by 1pm a steady 10-12kts had developed out of the North which stayed with us throughout the day and provided excellent conditions. 

Six races were held in each fleet, sailed close enough to shore to provide great spectating from the public boat launch. The Catamounts, in three berths, sailed very well at the front of both fleets, with Middlebury's first team close behind and ultimately taking second. Williams Ephs also sailed very well, with two first-place finishes by their B-fleet team. No protests were filed and spirits were high all day.  

Thanks to Terry Duncan (Midd '15) for sharing her memories of regatta namesake and Olympic sailor Staurt H. Walker (Midd '43) at the competitors meeting, and to Brent Coulthard, Tom Tucker, Will Procter (Midd '24), and others for helping in the committee and mark boats. Thanks also to the many grill-cooks who helped keep people fed in the fields of Panton VT. And always great to see resident Bullseye "Turncoat" (Annie Hopper, Midd '14) also out enjoying the conditions.
