Nevins Trophy

The 2024 Nevins Trophy regatta started off with a blustery northwesterly that oscillated to varying degrees throughout the day. Racing was tight from the first start all the way until the end of the day. Despite many general recalls, 8 races were completed thanks to a race committee that was constantly on the move. One race was abandoned and re-started thanks to a gate mark that wandered off at a particularly inopportune moment.

No protests, hearings, nor etc. filed - competitors raced hard on the water and let their results speak for themselves. Things are tight at the front between Yale and Stanford with Harvard not too far behind. A quick view of the scores indicates multiple instances where several teams are all within ten points of each other - we all look forward to seeing how things shake out with 6 more races on Sunday.

Sunday started off shifty and light out of various easterly directions. 2 races for the A fleet and 1 for the B fleet were completed before the wind totally died and RC sent both fleets in for quick break. A northeasterly then promptly filled in out of nowhere and decided to power up to 10 knots or so and stick around for the rest of the day, albeit with enough shifts to keep RC constantly moving marks around. With tide going out for nearly the entire day the current ended up being a noticeable factor that contributed to a few more general recalls and, when combined with the shifty breeze, a Race Committee boat spinning around on its anchor multiple times.

Yale pulled away on day 2 with a remarkable performance that included first place finishes in half of the day's races - congrats to the Bulldogs.

2 protests were reported to RC on the water today but ultimately none filed. One sailor from USCGA deserves recognition for doing the right thing and retiring after finishing race 13 given their realization they had made a mistake when doing some penalty turns.

Thanks to the KP team members and Waterfront Staff that worked hard throughout the weekend to keep things moving. We got all 14 races done just in time for the deadline as a result of their efforts. Thanks as well to Sacred Heart University & Fairfield Ludlowe HS Head Coach Ben Quincy for coming out with one of his FLHS sailors on Sunday to help run races.
