Kennedy Cup

Summary

Saturday, November 2:

Sunny skies, temperatures in the high 50's and a 12-14 knot northwest breeze greeted competitors for the opening race of the Kennedy Cup Regatta. Ten teams representing five conferences from around the country came to compete for this Collegiate Big Boat National Championships. PRO Paul Clissold was kept busy throughout the day as the wind shifted through 80 degrees back and forth throughout the course of the day. Keeping in phase with the difficult conditions kept tacticians busy. Five races were held in a range of wind that was 5-14 knots throughout the day. The Charleston Cougars were able to master the day with good boat speed, keeping in the most pressure on the course. After day one, they are followed in the standings by the Navy Midshipmen and Coast Guard Bears.

Sunday, November 3:

Cool temperatures, sunny skies and a northeasterly breeze of 10 knots greeted the sailors early in the day. For the three races held, the wind ranged from 6-10 knots with a strong ebb current. The steady breeze made it easier on the race committee but races were still most expertly conducted. By the end of the day, the Charleston Cougars retained their lead to win the regatta by one point over the Midshipmen from Navy. Rounding out the top three were the Coast Guard Bears.
