CCYC Fall Open #1

Summary

Saturday, September 7:

Saturday dawned overcast with a frontal wind from the N at 20kts, gusting 25kts. Harbor start at 0930 and first race at 1000. The first race was challenging for the teams with a few capsizes. By the second race the wind increased to 27kts, gusting 32kts. Racing was difficult with multiple capsizes and a breakdown. Racing conditions were deemed unsafe for the participants and boats, so racing was canceled for the day. There were many new sailors/racers in the fleet, so the coaches conducted a heavy air seminar for an hour and a half. The racers were appreciative of the learning opportunity and felt their day was well spent.

Sunday, September 8:

The day started overcast with winds where they left off Saturday, 25kts gusting 28kts from the N. After a one hour postponement the wind dropped to 17kts, gusting 20kts. A course was set inside the breakwater of the harbor and racing started at 1130. The teams had a chance to demonstrate their new knowledge of heavy weather sailing. The racing was noticeably improved! As the day progressed the wind dropped to NNE 14-17 kts for perfect conditions. A total of 7 races were run before the time limit expired. Boats and equipment were cleaned and stowed, teams visited for a short while, and the event concluded at 1500.
