The event was sailed in 420's. The competitors declined to use spinnakers contrary to the Notice of Race.
Three of the original teams that were scheduled for the event [ Michigan, Miami, Michigan St.] did not participate.
The event was held on the Detroit River with about a 4 knot current. The wind was from the NE and varêd from 5 to 9 knots. The sky was mostly sunny and the temperature was in the low 80's.
The starts were competitive, but Grand Valley and Wisconsin separated from the field as each race progressed. The top two teams were very close at most of the finishes with Grand Valley winning out in the most races to take first place. Hillsdale was consistently better than Indiana to take 3rd place.
Bill Heller from DYC was Regatta Chair and assembled a number of volunteers which was larger than the number of competitors to help with the event. George Griswold from DYC was the Principle Race Officer for the event. Although there were no protests, Ed Theisen was prepared to hear them as Chief Judge.
