Sunny skies, mild temperatures and blustery conditions with sustained 10-15 mph winds welcomed sailors from SAISA and MAISA to coastal Oriental, North Carolina on Saturday for the StormPack Hurricane Relief Regatta and Community Clean-up. With Saturday dedicated to racing, you couldn't have asked for a better day. Racing at the mouth of the Neuse River, a combined fleet of 18 boats representing 9 teams provided great viewing for locals and great competition for sailors. The host NC State Wolfpack jumped out to an early lead in the regatta, but MAISA's William & Mary Tribe mounted a string of race finishes to take over first position. William & Mary held the regatta lead until a late surge from UNC-Chapel Hill in race seven allowed the Tar Heels to overtake the top spot, bumping the Tribe to second. NC State's Red Terror squad finished in third overall on the strength of a dominant 29-point A-division win.
On Sunday, teams gathered once again but instead of sailing, sailors were divided up into smaller work groups and assigned to different locations around Oriental and Pamlico County, North Carolina to help with clean up and debris removal from Hurricane Florence. Members of the community who asked for help were paired up with college sailors enthusiastic to help with the recovery effort. The whole day's worth of clean up was a stark reminder of both the destructive power of nature, as well as how bad plastic pollution impacts our planet. It's amazing what washes up in a storm.
Special thanks to Bow to Stern Boating for hosting the event and camp-out, as well as helping to organize the workday. Thanks to Keith from Towndock.net for the great help to get the word out about the clean up and welcome our sailors to town with great enthusiasm. Good luck to the many people we worked with and those who are still facing a challenging recovery from the hurricane.
A special note: this was the first regatta in more than 4 years for the East Carolina Pirates. Welcome back to College Sailing!

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.
The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
