Toni Deutsch '58 Regatta

Summary

Saturday, September 8:

Overcast and mid-60 temps welcomed the sailors from 13 schools to the Toni Deutsch Regatta this year. Breeze was from the ENE at 5-10 knots until it began to fade and get a bit wanky at the end of the afternoon. Racing was halted after 7 races as the breeze stability had gone away entirely. A Division sailed in FJs and then one race in Fireflies and the opposite was true for B Division. Racing was extremely competitive with all boats really pushing the starting line hard in both divisions.

Toni was on deck at the pavilion and out on the water observing the racers at her regatta. She was the first woman athlete to get awarded a varsity letter at MIT and it was for her commitment and performance on the sailing team. Her team also won the ICSA Championship in her graduation year of 1958.

The home team from MIT is really putting on a show with a significant lead after the first day of sailing in the combined scores of both divisions. Bowdoin College's Clair Havig and Alissa Chen are leading in A Division while MIT's Emily Haig crushed in B with Brooke McGoldrick and Sarah Caso sharing crew responsibilities.

Sunday, September 9:

A nicer NE breeze with thinly overcast skies and temps in the mid 60s made for some fun sailing on the Charles River. Eventually breeze velocity got up to 13 knots with a couple of swimmers enjoying the mid-70 degree water.

Hats off to the home team who won both Divisions and just killed it overall to keep the trophy on the wall at the MIT Sailing Pavilion. It was a full team effort with Annie Hughes in A Division sailing with Noa Yoder today and Kaila Pfrang yesterday and Emily Haig sailing B Division with Brooke McGoldrick sharing the crew duties along with Sarah Caso.

Thirteen races were completed with long inner and outer trapezoid courses. Lucinda Charles helped out on RC duty today. All competitors enjoyed the quite long races in the urban setting.

Score history

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.

The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
