67th Timme Angsten Memorial Regatta

Summary

Saturday, November 23:

The regatta was named for the late Timme Angsten. Born in Oak Park, Ill., in 1927, he became interested in dinghy sailing while in high school. Later, he raced Stars, and in 1943, won the Great Lakes Championship in his first season as owner of his Star, Skylark. Timme remained active in Stars, competing against such top sailors as Olympic winners Bert Williams and Harry Nye, as well as Dick Stearns and Gary Comer.

Timme graduated from Oak Park High School in 1945 and entered Northwestern University where he organized the first sailing club. He had also been racing as a member of the Chicago Yacht Club Dinghy Fleet. Timme arranged an invitational collegiate regatta to be held at his home club over Thanksgiving weekend. Northwestern won that first event in 1947, and the regatta has been an annual tradition since then.

Within a year of the first race, Timme tragically died of a childhood head injury, but the regatta has carried on with the support of the Chicago Yacht Club and the Angsten family. Timme's father, the late Commodore Henry Angsten, donated the perpetual trophy and the Angsten family continues to help defray regatta costs each year.

Sunday, November 24:

Teams arrived at Chicago Yacht Club to 16F degree weather and wind out of the South at 13knots. Boats had remained frozen over night and had not thawed, so every block, pully and line was frozen stiff. AP flag was raised and racing was delayed on shore two hours before being canceled for the day thus ending the regatta. Thank you to all of the volunteers who made the regatta happen. Specifically Vice Chairman Caterine Duncan, Cheif Judge Fred Hagedorn, Safety Chairman Bill Fox, Principal Race Officer Rick Lillie, and our fantastic on the water staff led by Lynn Lynch. Thank you to all the competitors for coming to the regatta and willing to sail in the cold weather!

Score history

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.

The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
