Kathryn Hammond Memorial

Summary

Saturday, October 23:

The University of Texas thanks everyone who came out to Kathryn Hammond this Fall. This regatta is in memory of a past team mate who was on the team from 1991 to 1995, participating in Women's Nationals as well as an active part of the team. Just four years after graduating, Kathryn passed away in a car accident. Kathryn’s impact on the team extended much further than sailing, so to honor her memory, this annual regatta is named after her.

Saturday’s racing began around 10:30 after clouds and hints of thunder threatened to postpone. Although the storm had passed, breeze steadied above 10 knots. The weather remained overcast and hit a high of 85 degrees. Race committee ran W1s, W2s, and W3s throughout the day, getting 8 races in A and 8 Races in B completed. Breeze topped out at 16 knots in the middle of the day, but started to die off to 7-8 knots by the end of racing. Conditions were very shifty and puffy, even for Lake Travis. Due to capsizing, some teams were DNF or DNS. A special thanks to out mark set team of Seth Cunningham ‘12, Fedja Pivodic ‘11, and Hazel Mahony ‘11 for boat recovery and to Alex Cockerill ‘12 for keeping score.

Sunday racing began just after 10:00 with considerably less breeze that continued to die as temperatures rose. Skies were sunny and temperatures were in the upper 80s. Breeze started around 8 knots but died down to 4-6 knots. Shifty conditions continued as Race Committee ran W1s and W2s. There were 4 races sailed in A and 3 races in B, which negated race 12A. Again, special thanks to markset of Seth Cunningham ‘12, Jim Hartman ‘14, and Hazel Mahony ‘11 as well as Luke Cragin ‘14 for keeping score.

Although no protests were filed, a number of sailors were not ICSA registered and approved (PR 13 and 14). According to PR 15, races these sailors participated in are disqualified.

Thank you to our PRO, Ed Taylor, and Austin Yacht Club for hosting us.

Congratulations to Texas A&M Galveston for their win!

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.

The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
