Sloop National Championship

Summary

Friday, October 23:

Friday: Competitors arrived to a 15 knot NE wind which lasted for the practice session. The breeze faded and turned to the east making very difficult conditions. 3 races were completed, all windward-leeward 3 times around in 5-8 knots of wind. One breakdown was awarded for a failed universal. Forecast is for stormy conditions on Saturday. SMC is in the lead.

Saturday: Morning brought light rain with southerly winds ranging from 10-14 knots. Four races were sailed in the morning using course W6 and W5. After a brief lunch break competitors went back out to winds 15-18 for the eight race. The last two races the wind decreased to under 10 knots.

The Championship came down to the last race between St. Mary's and Boston College. BC got behind on the first beat while St. Mary's had the points needed to win but Skipper Taylor Canfield fought hard enough to pass one boat on the final run to finish tied with St. Mary's and won the tie breaker on virtue of their three 1st place finishes.

Special thanks to the Jury: Greg Kiely , Chief Judge, Greg Hall and Leo Berendes.

Congratulations to the Boston College team on winning the 2009 Cornelius Shields, Sr. Trophy.

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.

The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
